This fun low-sew fox is perfect for any skilled crocheter that wants a cute project to keep their hands busy. Make your own little Red Fox by following the written pattern below.

Size of the crochet Fox: If you use the recommended size hook and yarn weight the pattern provides, the hippo will be 18cm/ 7.08 inches.

Skills: This is a beginner-friendly pattern. Basic amigurumi crochet skills are needed. Magic ring, Single crochet, increase and decrease. The head, ears and nose are apart from the body. Legs and body is one piece and the arms are attached as you crochet the body.

What you will need to crochet this Hippo

  • scissors
  • stuffing
  • 10/12 mm safety eyes (optional)
  • stitch marker
  • tapestry needle
  • Wire pet grooming brush for mane

Stitch terms:

  • SC: Single Crochet
  • INC: INCrease
  • CH: Chain
  • DEC: DECrease
  • SLP: Slip stitch
  • MC: Magic Circle
  • Puff stitch

Here is the free fox pattern:

Attach limbs without sewing

Crochet the limbs first, pinch the opening of the limb between your thumb and index finger and sc/slip sitch across

Crochet your main crochet piece (body) and place the arms where you want them to be attached. Make sure they’re symmetrically aligned with the eyes or nose if needed.

Insert the hook through the limb’s stitches first and the body’s stitches, crochet as normal, This can be a slip stitch or a single crochet, depending on your preference.

Head:

Colour A: (Orange)

1: MC, 6 SC [6]

2: INC x6 [12]

3: (SC, INC) x6 [18]

4: (2 SC, INC) x6 [24]

5: (3 SC, INC) x6 [30]

6: (4 SC, INC) x6 [36]

7: (5 SC, INC) x6 [42]

8-15: SC in each stitch around [42] 

Safety eyes will be placed in rounds 12-13, 10 stitches apart.

The colour change C : (White)

16: SC in each stitch around [42]

17: (5 SC, DEC) x6 [36]

18: (4 SC, DEC) x6 [30] – Stuff the head

19: (3 SC, DEC) x6 [24]

20: SC in each stitch around [24]

21: (2 SC, DEC) x6 [18]– Stuff the head completely by this point.

22: (SC, DEC) x6 [12]

Slip stitch and weave in end.

Face shaping the eyes:

Take white embroidery thread and make a stitch on the outer corner of each eye. Pull the thread tight to pull the eyes together. Repeat the stitches with both eyes to create the white highlight on either side. Use thin black cotton thread for the brow above each eye.

NOSE:

Colour C: (White)

1: MC, 6 SC [6]

2: INC x6 [12]

3: (SC, INC) x6 [18]

Switch now between colour A and C

4: Colour A: (2 SC, INC) x3, Colour C: (2 SC, INC) x3 [24]

5-6: Colour A: SC in the next 12 stitches, Colour C: SC in the next 12 stitches [24] – stuff the nose.

Slip stitch and leave a yarn tail to attach the nose to the front of the face. The white from the nose should line up with the white of the face.

NOSE EMBROIDERY: Using some dark brown yarn, make a small triangle in front of the nose and fill it in with long vertical stitches.

EARS: (Make two)

(no stuffing needed)

Color B (Black):

1: MC, 5 SC [5]

2: INC x5 [10]

3: SC in each stitch [10]

4: (SC, INC) x5 [15]

Colour A (Orange):

5-6: SC in each stitch [15] 

7: (2 SC, INC) x5 [20]

8-9: SC in each stitch around [20] 

Pinch the ear flat between your thumb and index finger and slip stitch across closing the bottom of the ear. End with a slip stitch, Leave a strand of yarn to sew the ears between rounds 5- 13 from the center of the head.

 

EAR MARKINGS:

Use some white yarn and make three stitches in the middle of the ear, two outer stitches in a shape of a V, and one in the middle.

If you are not going to attach the tail and arms as you crochet the body:

Leave a strand of yarn and attach the tail between rounds 13/14, counting from the top of the neck. Make a little stitch at the bottom of the tail to keep it in an upward position. Attach the arms between rounds 3/4 counting from the top of the neck.

 

ARMS: (Make two)

COLOUR B: (Black)

1: MC, 6 SC [6]

2: (1SC, INC) x3 [9]

3-8: SC in each stitch around [9]

Change to colour A: (Orange)

9-13: SC in each stitch around [9]  – stuff the arm up to round 10

Pinch the opening of the arm between your index and thumb

and SC 4 sts across, closing up the bottom of the arm. Weave in ends

 

TAIL:

Colour B: (Black)

1: MC, 5 SC [5]

2: INC x5 [10]

3: SC in each stitch [10]

4: (SC, INC) x5 [15]

5-6: SC in each stitch around [15] 

Colour A (Orange):

7: (2 SC, INC) x5 [20]

8-12: SC in each stitch around [20] 

13: (2 SC, DEC) x5 [15]

14-16: SC in each stitch around [15] 

17: (SC, DEC) x 5 [10]

18: SC in each stitch around [10] -Stuff the tail

Pinch the opening of the tail flat between your thumb and index finger, and sc 5 across both stitches. cut and weave in the end.

Note: You may need to adjust the tail placement because tension or stitch mishaps may prevent the tail from lining up between the legs. SC around the body till you can place the tail between the legs.

Note: You may need to adjust the arm placement because tension or stitch mishaps may prevent the arms from lining up on the sides. There should be 5 stitches open between the arms.

31: SC 5, insert arm (4), SC 5, insert second arm (4) [18]

32: (SC, DEC) x6 [12] – stuff the body fully

33-34: SC in each stitch around [12] * 2 Rounds*

ATTACH THE HEAD:

Use a knitting needle to keep the head in place while you attach the head to the body using the whip stitch method.

THE TAIL:

to keep the tail form hanging down, secure it with a stitch at the bottom to keep the tail in an upward position.
