Size of the crochet penguin: If you use the recommended size hook and yarn weight the pattern provides, the hippo will be 28cm/ 11.08 inches.

Skills: This is a beginner-friendly pattern. Basic amigurumi crochet skills are needed. Magic ring, Single crochet, increase and decrease. 

What you will need to crochet this cuddle me penguin

  • 3.5mm hook
  • scissors
  • stuffing
  • 10/12 mm safety eyes (optional)
  • stitch marker
  • tapestry needle
  • Wire pet grooming brush for mane

Yarn: Double knit / light worsted weight yarn

For this penguin I used Snowball DK and Elle Gold I got from Bibi’s Wool Center.

  • Colour A: Body 60g
  • Colour B: Head 20g
  • Colour C: Beak and feet 10g
  • White cotton for the eye highlight
  • A Little bit of brown or black embroidery floss for the facial details.

  • MC: Magic Ring
  • SC: Single Crochet
  • DC: Double crochet
  • INC: INCrease
  • DEC: DECrease
  • SLP: Slip stitch
  • CH: Chain
  • BLO: Back loop only

If you have never made a no-sewing or low-sewing pattern and you are not sure how to attach the limbs while crocheting the body you can read up on my 5 steps to change an amigurumi into a low- or no- sewing pattern.

How to turn an amigurumi pattern in to a low sew pattern

Here is the free penguin pattern:

WINGS: (Make two)

Colour A: (Pink)

1: MC, 6 SC [6]

2: INC x6 [12]

3: SC in each stitch around [12]

4: (SC, INC) x6 [18]

5: (2SC, INC) x6 [24]

6-10: SC in each stitch [24] *5 Rounds*

11: (3SC, INC) x6 [30]

12-13: SC in each stitch [30] 

14: (3 SC, DEC) x 6 [24]

15-18: SC in each stitch around [24] 

19: (2 SC, DEC) x 6 [18]

20-22: SC in each stitch around [18] -requires no stuffing

End off with a slip stitch, pinch the opening of the wing between your fingers, and slip stitch or SC 9 across to close the wing. Weave in the yarn strand

BEAK:

Colour C: (Yellow)

1: MC, 5 SC [5]

2: INC x5 [10]

3-6: SC in each stitch around [10] 

7: (SC, INC) x5 [15] – stuff the beak

Slip stitch, leave a strand of yarn to sew on the beak to the face before cutting.

FEET (Make two)

Colour C: (Yellow)

1: MC, SC 5 [5]

2: (INC ) x5 [10]

3: (1 SC, INC) x5 [15]

4: SC in each stitch around [15]

5: CH 5, Skip 5 stitches and continue the round of SC from stitch 6 [15]

6: SC in the back loop of the (chain 5), SC as normal in each of the SC stitches [15]

7: (2 SC, INC) x5 [20]

8: (3 SC, INC) x 5 [25]

9-10: SC in each stitch around [25]

Note: If the opening for the leg is not in the center when you fold the foot in half you will need to slip stitch till you reach the corner.

Pinch the opening of the feet between your fingers and slip stitch evenly across both sides of the feet closing the opening. Cut the yarn and weave in the end. Stuff the feet.

LEGS: (Make two)

Colour A: (Pink)

1: Insert your hook into the first stitch of the leg opening on the foot. SC 5, now working on the “Front section of the foot” SC 5 in the front loop you left when doing round 6 of the feet. [10]

2: (SC, INC) x5 [15]

3-6: SC in each stitch around [15]  -stuff the legs more firmly

Slip stitch, pinch the opening of your leg between your fingers, and slip stitch or SC 7 stitches evenly across.

(Rejoin the yarn in the front loop of round 23 of the head where you left a stitch marker)

Slip stitch and leave a very long strand of yarn to attach “part two” onto the head.

Attach the beak:

Place the beak just under the centerpiece of the nose. Whip stitch around the beak, keeping it in place with pins.

Facial features:

Lashes: Use the black yarn and loop a stitch around the top half of the eye, inserting the needle one stitch away from the eye to create the longish curved lashes.

White highlight: Using white yarn loop a stitch around the bottom section of the eye. pinch the eyes together when threading the yarn through and pull it tight to shape the face of your penguin. Loop the white yarn around the eye for a second time, this time not pulling so tight.
