The Granny square hexagon cardigan I made with Elle yarns brand new Alula Double knit in the colour 625 Lovebird.
Elle sent me some of the new Alula cakes to work with and showcase the yarn in the best way possible. When I saw that the hexagon cardigan was trending this winter I had to get on the trend and make one myself. This is a super easy crochet piece and you only need to know how to crochet a hexogen shape.
I used a basic granny square hexagon but you can use any pattern your heart desires as long as the pattern has 6 even sides you are ready to go!
I don’t have a step by step written pattern for my creations, this is just a post to explain what I did to create this cardigan.
I will link the YouTube video I watched for the hexagon shape and add the diagram of the hexagon I found on Pinterest.

I followed this diagram on Pinterest. If you need to watch a video you can follow the one I have pinned below.
The steps I took to make my cardigan
The yarn:
You will need two cakes of Alula DK yarn. If you don’t have that available you can use any DK/ light worsted weight/ #weight 3 yarn.
You will need 1200m / 1312yards / 400g / 15 Oz of yarn to make a Medium to large caridgan and a 5mm / H /8H crochet hook.
You will also need some black or other solid colour yarn (60g) for the ribbing and edging around the cardigan.
The size of my cardigan L 65cm/25.5inch, chest W 84cm/33inch, sleeve Length from shoulder 60cm/23.5inches.
Size of the hexagon:
For the base of the cardigan I made the hexagon shape, you will have to make two, one for each side of your cardigan. I increased the hexagon by 18 rounds before I adjusted the body length and sleeves. I wanted the length in the body and sleeves but I didn’t want the wide waist around the center.
Increase the length of the sleeves and bottom:
Once I have completed the 18 rounds of the hexogen I added 13 rows at the bottom and 23 rows for the sleeves. I also added 2 rows in the center of the cardigan to give it a little more depth around the waist.
How to fold your panels:
Here is a visual layout on how to fold your shape and on what sides you will be adding rows for the sleeves and bottom of your cardigan. If you want to add the two rows for a wider waste, you will crochet two rows on side 4 and 6.
The image is for the right side of your cardigan, for the left side you will fold it and just flip it horizontally.
Side 6 of right panel and side 4 of the left panel will be the back of your cardigan when you sew the two sides together.
Note:
Remember to keep your cardigan inside out till the very end other wise you sewing stitches will be on the outside. I slipped stitched the sides together.
Sleeve decrease:
At the end of my sleeve to decrease it and narrow it down I did 3 single crochet and a decrease, I then went around again doing 2 single crochet decrease.
The Ribbing:
For the ribbing around my wrist I chain 21, and SC in the chain next to the hook down the chain. I then worked in the back loop only with the next 30 rows doing Single crochet stitches. I folded the two sides together and slip stitched across.
I then folded the ribbing in half having the two ridged sides together, placed it inside of the sleeves (with the cardigan still inside out) and attached them too the sleeve with a SC.
For the edging around the cardigan I just placed a Double crochet in each stitch around, starting at the bottom left corner in front and working my way around the edge.
More about Elle Alula Yarn project!
Like I mentioned in the beginning. This is not a formal pattern, just a post about the steps I took to create my cardigan using the Yarn Elle sent for being a ambassador for the company.
I loved working with the Alula yarn. The colours are vibrant and well blended into each other giving a subtle change when you create you piece. The colour of yarn truly lives up for its name, as you do feel like a lovebird when wearing your design, it is definitely one to turn heads in public.
I do find the Alula yarn difficult to frog because of how fuzzy the yarn is and if you frog and end put pulling or tugging to hard the yarn can snap.
Elle Alula is a very textured yarn so the consistency in thickness throughout the yarn does change. So if you are looking for a yarn with the same thickness throughout I would not recommend this one. I personally love this texture as it just gives a more personal touch to your creation.
Alula yarn is light weight which makes this yarn perfect to use for garments or afghans. So if you are looking to make yourself something unique and scream WOW, I would highly suggest that you grab yourself some of this yarn at your local yarn store!
