How to root the hair for your Crochet Horse
Step 1:
Use an old carboard box or an A5 size journal or book to measure all the hair at the same length.
Step 2:
Wrap the yarn around the width of the book roughly 40 times. Cut the yarn only on the one side of the book.
You will now have 40 strands of loose yarn.
Rooting:
Once you have your strands of yarn you can start rooting the mane for Apollo. The mane on Apollo’s head is just one streak down the back of his head, I inserted some pins to keep the mane straight down the center of the head.
Rooting steps:
- Place pins down the center of the head to keep a straight line.
- Insert your hook under and over a SC stitch between the crochet horses ears.
- Take a strand of yarn and fold it in half.
- Hook the strand onto the crochet hook and pull the strand through – A loop will now be on the crochet hook and the two yarn tails will be on the opposite side.
- Yarn Over both strands and pull through loop.
- Repeat this Rooting method down the head of the horse.
Repeat the same rooting process with the tail.
Tail:
Colour E: (White)
Root the hair for the tail between rounds 8-9 counting from the bottom of the body, making the tail roughly 4 stitches wide.

Brush out the hair
Using a pet grooming brush you can brush out Apollo’s hair giving him softer look.
You can get a wire brush from your local pet store or at the pet section by your super market.
In part four of this Crochet-a-long, we will assemble all the parts for Apollo
