free tutorial on how to do the Back and Front loop half double crochet stitch

The Back & Front loop half-double crochet photo tutorial

Today I will be sharing a brand new crochet stitch tutorial with you. This is one of my favorite HDC stitch methods, the Back & Front loop half double crochet stitch. It can really give your creations a nice texture and will make some heads turn because form a far it does look like a complicated stitch.

Blog Disclosure: My blog contains Google ads, these ads support me financially so that I can keep on giving you free patterns. These ads are at no extra charge to you. Thank you for your support. Please share the direct link of the blog link and don’t make screen-prints of the pattern. Although the design is free it still remains the property of Yarn Over with Natasha

What you will need to create this stitch pattern:

The fun thing about this stitch pattern you can use any weight yarn and size hook. If you want to show off the texture I would suggest that you stick with cotton or acrylic yarn, anything fuzzy yarn will hide some of the texture.

In this photo tutorial I used Elle ARAN (medium-weight yarn/10 ply yarn)  300g skein with a 5mm hook.

Stitch terms:

-CH(s): Chain(s)

-HDC: Half Double Crochet

-BLO: Back Loop Only

-FLO: Front Loop Only

Note:

-Ch 2 at the start of each row does not count as a stitch

When you want to design a panel always had 2 stitches to your chain count, because when you create your HDC foundation chain you will be working in the 3rd hook from the chain.

If you haven’t worked in the back or front loop of a stitch before I have added this chart to help you understand it better.

When you look at your stitches from above you will see two loops. The loop that is the closest to your body is the FRONT LOOP (Pink) and the loop facing away from you is the BACK LOOP (purple). You will only be inserting your hook under one of these loops at a time doing this stitch method.

Instructions:

1: You first start off with a slip stitch and then chain the desired amount of stitches you want + 2 at the end.

2: (Your HDC foundation stitch would be straight forward ) HDC in the third chain form the hook and HDC in each of the remaining chains you have created. At the end of your round CH2, and turn your work.

From your second row you will start alternating between the Back and Front loop.

3: (Working in BLO, HDC. Working in FLO, HDC in next stitch). Repeat from (…) across until the last stitch. CH2, turn your work.

4: Repeat row 3 till you have reached the desired length of what you want your piece to be.
